Our SONG JIANG BATTLE ARRAY Contingent BY Gladys and Elli
This summer vacation, our University President Milton Meng-Hsiung Shieh, Director Jing-Shing Chiou of the Department of Tourism Management and Mr. Ching Chang led the Song Jiang squad, which consisted of students in the Department of Tourism Management and was invited by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan to perform and advertise for Taiwan for five days（Sep.15 to Sep .20）at The New Center in Tsim-sha-tsui, Hong Kong. There the Hong Kong audiences were delighted to witness the dazzling reenactment of ancient pageantry and warfare of the Song Jiang Battle Array.
The Song Jiang squad of Shin Chien University is the first of its kind among universities in Taiwan. There are forty eight members and most of the members are girls. Since it was set up in March, 2004, many people have paid close attention to it.
For their performances in the Song Jiang Battle Array Activity at Nai Men, Kaohsiung County from March 15 to March 23 this year, they obtained compliments on their skillful display. Guo-Jau He, who is their master, was very satisfied by their display and said, “Because undergraduate students have a good memory, they can remember all of the basic motions in ten days. If they keep practicing hard with all kinds of weapons, their performance will be better.”
The history of the Song Jiang Battle Array activity of Nei Men dates back more than two hundred years and is known all over the world. The Tourism Bureau has promoted the Song Jiang Battle Array as one of twelve great festival celebrations in Taiwan.
On January 1, 2003, the Song Jiang Battle Array of Nei Men won the “International Trophy” in the Rose Parade, which was held in Pasadena, California, U.S.A. It has become the most special cultural property of Nei Men. And this year, the Tourism Bureau wants to make the Song Jiang Battle Array known by tourists all over the world. Also, the Tourism Bureau hopes that Shin Chien University can enhance and glorify the traditional cultures of Nei Men and performances of Song Jiang Battle Array Contingent will become among the best tourism resources in Taiwan.
